A group of Venetians, on 1974 came up with an idea of non-competitive boat race in which different kind of rowing boat could participate. The first Vogalonga official race was organized on the next year with a protesting message against the growing use of powerboats who started to damage the historic city of Venice.
The race starts in St Marks Basin in front of the ducal palace, and after with theopening hymns to San Marco they head to a 30 kilometers long route along the various Venetian canals and islands.
The participants receive a commemorative medal and a participation certificate.
In the last years the numbers of participants have grown more than 6000 athletes.
