In 1516 the government of Serenissima decided that all the jewish population must live under a srtict control where they could practise onle few professions, of which money loaning and medicine. The word “ghetto” derives from the term “geti” then transforemd to “gheti” used in Venice to indicate the numerous founderies found in that area. Today, the jewish Ghetto is one of the vivacious and highly attended quartier of Venice and is the center of five beautiful Synagogue or Scole, less visible from outside, but rich and totaly decorated in the interior.
